A Joyful Potluck Celebration at McConaghy Community Centre

16th December, 2025 our group gathered at McConaghy Community Centre for a potluck party filled with warmth, laughter, and good food. The timing was perfect—the centre has just completed a renovation, and the changes are immediately noticeable and impressive.

A Fresh, Welcoming Space

The newly renovated entrance is wider and brighter, creating a welcoming first impression. Inside, the assembly hall now feels more open and spacious, making it an ideal venue for community gatherings. The improved layout allowed everyone to move around comfortably, mingle freely, and truly enjoy the event.

A Table Full of Flavours

We had about 60 participants, and everyone brought along a favourite dish—some lovingly home‑made, others thoughtfully picked up from local restaurants. The result was a rich and colourful spread of food:

  • Savoury dishes and comfort foods

  • A wide selection of desserts to suit different tastes

  • Foods representing different ethnic and cultural backgrounds

The variety was impressive, and everything was simply yummy and delicious. It was one of those meals where you want to try a little bit of everything—and then go back for more.

Gifts, Games, and Happy Surprises

In addition to great food, there were plenty of gifts donated by the group. These gifts were beautifully wrapped and displayed by Janet. Every participant received a prize to take home, which added a lot of excitement and smiles throughout the room.

The grand prize was especially eye‑catching: a robo ping pong machine, which drew plenty of cheers and admiration.

Julie and I were happy to receive a lovely set of crystal bowls along with a bag of kids’ toys—a thoughtful and practical combination.

Behind the Scenes: Our Dedicated Volunteers

A heartfelt thank-you goes to the volunteers Charles, Priscilla, Janet, Richard, Nelson, Vincent, George, Julie + husband and Julie + David, Li Jian (photographer), and more working tirelessly behind the scenes, especially those in the kitchen. They helped re-heat hot dishes so everyone could enjoy warm and yummy food, while carefully storing cold dishes in the fridge to keep them fresh, cool, and appetizing. Others were busy setting up and organizing the tables, making sure the food was well presented and easily accessible. Their quiet efficiency played a huge role in the success of the potluck.

Music, Movement, and Laughter

The fun didn’t stop at food and prizes. The program also included:

  • Karaoke performances, where brave (and enthusiastic) singers took the mic. (Mark, David - singing) (Nelson, Vincent - playing music)

  • A lively dance session for Zumba lovers, bringing energy and movement to the hall (Mirella instructor).

Whether watching, singing along, or dancing, everyone found a way to join in and enjoy the moment.

A Warm Welcome and Smooth Coordination

At the entrance, volunteers warmly welcomed participants and registered their names, which were later used for the lucky draw. Special thanks to Richard Huang and Linda Cheung for managing reception duties so smoothly and cheerfully.

A special thank-you goes to Charles and Priscilla for their excellent coordination of the entire event. Their careful planning and calm leadership ensured that everything—from food flow to entertainment—ran seamlessly.

We are also grateful to the McConaghy community centre staff—Jennifer, Kim, and Mario—for their generous assistance and for allowing us to use this beautifully renovated venue. Their support made a real difference.

Finally, thank you to all players and participants who attended the potluck party. Your enthusiasm, generosity, and shared dishes are what truly made this gathering special.

Final Thoughts

It was truly a wonderful time of good food and fun, made even better by the renewed space at McConaghy Community Centre and the strong sense of community among participants. Events like this remind us how meaningful it is to come together—sharing food, laughter, and simple joys.

We left with full stomachs, happy hearts, and great memories. I’m already looking forward to the next gathering.
