Episode 4 –
Episode 4 – The Thrill of Competition: From Tension to Release
I still remember my very first official match. My palms were sweating, and I could barely hold the paddle steady. The tension before the first serve felt like my heart was about to jump out of my chest.
At the start, my opponent’s momentum overwhelmed me, and I quickly lost a few points. Panic set in, and I almost forgot how to swing. But then, in that critical moment, my coach’s words echoed in my mind: “Focus on the next ball, not the last one.”
Taking a deep breath, I steadied myself. Slowly, I found my rhythm again. When I managed to hit a few solid returns, the shift from nervousness to enjoyment was indescribable. Each rally became like a game of heartbeats — winning or losing mattered, but what mattered more was the feeling of being completely immersed.
When the match finally ended, regardless of the outcome, a sense of release washed over me. It felt like putting down a heavy burden. That’s what makes table tennis so captivating — it’s not just about competing against an opponent, but also about competing with your own mindset.
