🏓 Ping Pong Friend (16)
Lately, we have a new member in our ping pong group — Mr. Chan.
He’s in his seventies, of modest height, and speaks gently. When I first met him, he was carefully wiping his shiny new paddle.
I smiled and asked, “Just starting out?”
He replied, “I played when I was young, but only picked it up again after retiring.”
During his first practice, he was a bit nervous and often missed backhand shots. But he didn’t get discouraged — after every game, he’d laugh and say, “Let’s play another!”
Gradually, his movements became steadier, his sense of timing sharper. A few weeks later, he could rally with us for over ten strokes without missing.
One day after practice, he stayed behind to help.
I said, “You don’t have to do that.”
He smiled, “It’s been a long time since I’ve felt such a friendly atmosphere. It’s great that everyone supports each other.”
At that moment, I realized — for many seniors, coming to the ping pong gym isn’t just about exercise. It’s about belonging.
Every sound of the paddle hitting the ball reminds us: though we age, our hearts remain young.
