Residents looking to exchange damaged or broken Richmond Hill labeled blue boxes and/or green bins can once again do so for free. Council has eliminated the $8.45 exchange fee that was initially introduced in August 2020 to help offset replacement costs. This change is effective retroactive to June 22, 2021. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, waste bin sales/exchanges were paused from Jan. 13 to June 21, 2021. Refunds Residents who paid to exchange a damaged Richmond Hill labeled blue box and/or green bin between June 22 and Sept. 22, 2021, will be issued a refund. A Chinese technology executive held in Canada on US fraud charges could be freed as early as Friday after prosecutors said an extradition request against her would be dropped. Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of Huawei, was detained in December 2018 at the request of the US. The two sides agreed that all charges would eventually be dropped. The case sparked an international row, straining China's relations with the US and Canada. It has been the subject of intense negotiations between US and Chinese diplomats. The US alleged Ms Meng misled the bank HSBC over the true nature of Huawei's relationship with a company called Skycom, putting the bank at risk of violating US sanctions against Iran. On Friday the US Department of Justice (DOJ) said it had reached a deferred prosecution agreement. This means the DOJ would hold off from prosecuting Ms Meng until December 2022.  A new kind of temporary local transit service: convenient, safe, quiet, zero emissions and accessible The West Rouge Automated Shuttle Trial is a project launched in partnership among the City of Toronto, Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), and Metrolinx. This temporary trial uses a low-speed automated vehicle that is mostly self-driving. A human attendant will always be on-board to take over driving if needed. The shuttle will begin on-road testing in September 2021, with passenger service planned to begin in October. The service may extend until end of February 2022, depending how the vehicle performs in winter weather conditions. Automated vehicles have the potential to reshape and redefine our transportation network. This trial is an opportunity for Torontonians to experience first-hand how it feels to ride on an automated vehicle, and to interact with it on public roads. Thank you for your patience as we gradually reopen. If you have an Adult 55+ membership that is currently on hold, your membership will be reinstated effective Monday, September 20. This will give you access to register for Fall programs on Tuesday, September 21, for programs that start the week of October 12. With your Adult 55+ membership you will also be able to reserve drop in program spots starting on Monday, October 4 for drop in programs that start the week of October 12. Reservations and payment must be made online. Punch cards are not currently accepted. Punch cards will be reinstated once restrictions allow and in person admissions can resume.
