Bottlenose Dolphin Rescue - Dolphin asks diver for help


Often a dolphin will help divers but it’s not too often a dolphin will ask a diver for help. A true testament to this mammal's intelligence. This is pretty incredible.

We have seen animal rescue, but rarely have we seen the animal search for humans to save it! 

On a night-time dive near Hawaii, 2 divers were found by a bottlenose dolphin and started to swim around them over and over again. When looking closer, one of them discovered the reason for this strange behaviour - the dolphin had a fishing line hooked around it, hindering its ability to swim.

They cut him free, and the dolphin swam away, relieved. The fact that a dolphin would come to humans for help is once again evidence of its amazing intelligence, as most injured animals would never come close to a human and would actually be aggressive and defensive. This is amazing to watch and a life-time experience for those two divers, who got to share a moment of true understanding with a wild animal.

One day in 2009 I woke up trying to get out of the bed in the early morning, I got a sharp stabbing pain at the right knee as I walked just a few steps away from my bed. The pain was crippling painful that I could hardly walk further to the ensuite washroom. It was the first crippling pain attack I ever experienced. What was the cause for this acute knee pain? I tried to recall my memories figuring out what would be the possible cause. The only thing I could associate the knee pain with was the anger outburst which led to restlessness during the day and the sleepless night that followed through.

I checked it out in the internet and found that anger outburst is an extremely emotional disturbance of the mind.  It can lead to abnormally large of amount of bio-active substances into the blood vessels of our own body. This sudden release of large of amount bio-stimulant substances can be very harmful to the body tissues and organs, even fatal irreversible organ damages. For this very reason, there are incidences of heart attack, stroke and even death following an anger outburst.

I went to see my family doctor for his medical advice and prescription. I told him briefly about my anger incident and knee pain. Then he told me the following treatment options for my knee pain:

Over-the-counter and prescription medications

This would include Tylenol and Aspirin, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen. They can reduce inflammation as well as knee joint pain.

Natural supplements

They are chondroitin and glucosamine the most popular alternatives in recent years. They have less side effects. The former aids in building joint cartilage, while the latter fights against degeneration of cartilage. Studies have proven their effectiveness in alleviating osteoarthritic joint pain,

Physical aids

Padding, crutches, and splints, and even simple rest can take the pressure off the knee and provide temporary relief while the joint recovers from injury.

Specific exercises

Simple stretching and low-impact aerobic activities such as walking and swimming increase joint strength and flexibility.

Now, my knee pain is almost gone. I still keep on taking chondroitin and glucosamine and low-impact exercise. The most important of all, I always remind myself don't get angry for the good of our own body.

Kim Smylie, Older Adult Program Assistant, has confirmed that effective Monday, November 4th, there will be an additional drop-in table tennis time at Rouge Woods from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. at the gym.  This drop-in time will run until the end of March, 2014.

Complaints About Table Tennis Players

Hi All,

We have received the following reminder (highlighted text) from Jennifer Ayres, Program Coordinator, Older Adults Community Services Department, with respect to a couple of complaints regarding table tennis players:

"I have received two complaints this week regarding the same issue - players are telling other players that they are not good enough to play in certain room or to be a part of the table tennis program.
This is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

As you know ALL of the programs offered to our members are RECREATIONAL, and NON COMPETITIVE.

Moving forward if we receive feedback that a participant has said this to another member I will speak with the individual directly.  If it continues they will not be welcome to participate in that program. 

If you could please send out a reminder to the Table Tennis players communicating that ALL of the Older Adult programs offered by the Town of Richmond Hill are recreational and are welcoming to all.  If they are looking for a competitive Table Tennis program this is not available at our centres."

當老人把 “那怎麼可能?” 變成 “為什麼不能?”

趙慕鶴40歲當學校工友。 75歲當背包客,暢遊英、德、法國。 93歲到醫院做2年志工。 95歲考上研究所,98歲拿到碩士畢業,名列吉尼斯紀錄。 100歲他的書法被大英圖書館收藏。 101歲在香港辦書法展,並且成為暢銷書作者!活著必須創造奇蹟! 

朋友:「老趙,你都要死了,還學什麼電腦?」⋯⋯
老趙:「可是,我現在還活著啊!」
  
“我住四樓”。 “四樓?”“對,每天爬上爬下有個十來趟。”說話的人,民國百年(2011年)正好滿100歲,但生活起居全都自理,神采奕奕,健步如常人,他是青春老超人──趙慕鶴。

2009年,98歲的他從南華大學哲學研究所取得碩士學位;念研究所之前,93歲在醫院當志工;志工之前,92歲才從空中大學畢業,也是國內最年長的大學畢業生。 “活到老,學到老”在他身上得到最深刻的驗證。 “我知道我可以的,”趙慕鶴說,“決定要做什麼事情,就要狠一點,否則做不成。”他勇敢嘗試人生,除了求學,也用於旅行。

74歲時,他獨自到歐洲自助旅行。不懂英文,也不會電腦,出國前又沒訂房,到底要住哪裡?“不用訂,”他老神在在的說,“每天下午五點鐘,你看有年輕人在車站遊覽回來,跟著走就找得到青年旅館。便宜啊!”他與背包客同擠20人一間的青年旅館,旅行五個月,全程只花新台幣16萬元。

旅經倫敦時,趙慕鶴寄宿在以前學生家裡,白天學生夫婦上班,他就擦玻璃窗、掃地,打掃完畢便出門旅遊,傍晚回家煮飯;他還取下廢棄木箱的木條,花一星期架起後院的籬笆,幫學生省下1000英鎊的工錢。 “我腦筋動得很快,就是靠這腦筋活!”他笑著說。

趙慕鶴活得精彩,歸因到原點,竟是以死亡為師。他說,“我這輩子就是逃難心理,人生是不停的逃難。”曾歷經抗日戰爭、國共內戰與白色恐怖,九死一生的經歷,讓趙慕鶴認真活在當下,從不閒下來。

現在,他為了方便買車票、看病掛號,開始自習上網、學電腦;因為上網常須打英文,於是他在客廳牆上,貼了一排毛筆寫的常用英文字母,自學英文。

最近兩個月,一位高雄師範的同事剛退休,來家裡拜訪趙慕鶴,看到牆上的英文和桌上的電腦,脫口就說:“老趙,你都要死了,還學什麼電腦?”“可是,我現在還活著啊!”趙慕鶴說完,自己也笑了。

逆時針精神,即打破老或病的框架,不因生理機能的老化而自我設限,因為精彩人生,端看你 用什麼心態去創造。

歷時兩個月,我們因製作《百年萬歲──青春老超人》,走訪多位台灣高齡長者,他們完全顛覆我們對銀髮族的刻板印象,令我們大開眼界。

誰說,七十歲後反應變慢,出國自助旅行很危險?八十歲後記憶力變差,電腦、英文,通通學不會?九十歲後骨頭脆弱,不能做高難度動作?一百歲以上太過虛弱,不能獨處,不能出門?
  
錯!唱戲、下腰、練字、讀碩士、學計算機,這群長者身上,彷彿有股逆時針的力量,讓他們突破限制,活出自我,活出熱情。他們,是一群擁有百年生命力的酷老人!

根據哈佛大學心理學教授蘭格研究,當老人把“那怎麼可能?”變成“為什麼不能?”改變自我設限的心態後,只要一星期,八十歲的老人就能變年輕。逆轉的關鍵不在生理,而是心態, 積極的心態將使人處於最佳狀態。

“逆時針”的關鍵包括:用心活在當下、擺脫自我限制的心態,以及找回對生活的控制權。

所謂「活得用心」亦即活在當下,把心力集中在手邊的問題。例如,當九十六歲的趙慕鶴要報考研究所時,他想的不是“我都這麼老了,有可能嗎?”而是“要怎麼樣才能考上?”為了考上,他蒐集研究所信息,了解西洋哲學是他的弱項,就挑燈夜戰、虛心求教,一心專注於考試,於是考上。
  
其次,是擺脫自我限制的心態。老了,就一定不中用了嗎?一百零五歲、台灣最年長的鄰長黃闊嘴,勇於嘗試冒險,也是從未讓年紀限制自己的例子。他屬於行動派,做事常忘懷年紀,只考慮自己想不想。七十幾歲時,他首度在海上騎水上摩托車,連年輕人都怕怕的水上拖曳傘,他也要飛上 天去看看。快九十歲時,他和小區鄰居一起練陀螺。過了百歲,坐在椅子上,照樣能把大陀螺準確的拋甩出去。

逆時針的第三個原則,是找回對生活的掌控權。像是台灣最高齡乳癌鬥士王東明,從她五十歲發現高血壓開始,便持續記錄血壓的變化,這個小動作幫助她用心參與,為自己的健康建立起一種控制感。那是一種信念與期望,相信只要做一些事情便能有所改變,從而達到目標。

正如同“老”不是瞬間發生,而是在不知不覺間降臨,漫長的老年生活,卻不能到老了才開始準備。用心的積極態度,也必須趁身體還強壯的時候逐漸培養,一步步修正自己的想法與行為。

蘭格博士對逆時針研究做了總結:“如果你任由自己受到心態的限制,不再對活動投入心力,有一天,你才會真的“老”到什麼都做不了。 ”...

生活中唯一幸福就是不斷前進。

九十八歲老翁趙慕鶴獲得私立南華大學哲學碩士學位,十三日參加畢業典禮獲頒「勤奮向學獎」。這位享受生命、熱愛生活的老大人,是「超級模范老翁」!

趙慕鶴早年畢業山東曲阜師範學院普通科,四十歲來台任教高雄女師,該校改制高雄師範大學,任職總務主任,六十六歲退休。

「生活中唯一幸福就是不斷前進」,兩年前,他考上南華大學哲學研究所。趙慕鶴家住高雄,而南華大學在嘉義大林。兩年來,他過「通學」生活。到校聽課,清晨六時自高雄搭火車至大林,再轉公車到學校。他身體健康,耳聰目明,獨往獨回,從未缺課。

他有生活目標,有自己的喜愛,無憂無慮享受現實生活可愛之處。他說,到南華大學研究所就讀,聽教授講課是最大的享受。 

他永遠朝著黎明、青春方面看。他的指導教授陳德和說,趙爺爺上課認真,從不缺課,報告準時交出,學習與求知精神,令人感動。

「老年時像青年時一樣高高興興吧!青年,好比百靈鳥,有他的晨歌;老年好比夜鶯,應有他的夜曲。」人生永遠是可愛的,也可永遠高高興興,向趙慕鶴老大人看齊!更多

有一天搭乘电梯,就遇上了电梯突然断电,虽然紧急供电系统几秒后就开始作用,可是电梯还是从13 楼迅速往下坠。还好当时记起曾经看过电视教的,赶快把每一层楼的按键都按下,好在电梯在五楼终于停止了... 真的有捡回一条命感觉!  当你面临生死一线间时,当下的你所做的每一个动作将决定你的生死与否。生活中,难免会坐到电梯,但是,万一遇到电梯发生事故,迅速往下坠落时,你可能产生一个念头,站在电梯里随它吧! 
可是今天.... 我在电视的一个外国频道看到一个非常好的节目。其中,他们还请了专家示范..... 电梯下坠时保护自己的最佳动作:
第一、( 不论有几层楼) 赶快把每一层楼的按键都按下。 
第二、如果电梯内有手把,请一只手紧握手把。 
第三、整个背部跟头部紧贴电梯内墙,呈一直线。 
第四、膝盖呈弯曲姿势。
说明:因为你不会知道它会何时着地,且坠落时很可能会全身骨折而死。  所以:第一点是当紧急电源启动时,电梯可以马上停止继续下坠。  第二点是为了要固定你人所在的位子,以致于你不会因为重心不稳而摔伤。  第三点是为了要运用电梯墙壁作为脊椎的防护。  第四点是最重要的是因为韧带是唯一人体富含弹性的一个组织,所以借用膝盖弯曲来承受重击压力,比骨头来承受压力来的大。

3.在高速路上汽车爆胎怎么办?
   
 第一时间抓住方向盘,控制方向,然后减挡(自动挡放到低速挡上),若可能的话,减速后可以轻轻试着有间断的点刹车,万万不能急刹车。

A one-day recreational games will be held on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at Oak Ridges Community Centre, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Please find attached (in a separate email) a detailed information sheet regarding the format of the games.  Also attached are a blank registration form, as well as a sample registration form for your ease of reference.  Please indicate your preference of matches, e.g., Singles, Doubles and/or Mixed Doubles to the club volunteers.  Deadline for registration will be Tuesday, November 19, 2013.
