Today was a good day at the table.
After more than two weeks away, I returned to our Richmond Hill ping pong group. I wasn’t expecting too much — just to move around, enjoy some rallies, and reconnect with friends.
But something interesting happened.
Several friends came up to me and said:
“You’re coming back… your strokes are back!”
That caught my attention.
The Shot That Said It All
At one point, I executed a forehand loop from the right corner — and it felt almost perfect.
The ball traveled in a beautiful arc:
- clearing the net safely
- dipping down sharply onto the table
- landing with control and spin
It wasn’t just a good shot — it was a complete shot.
In that moment, I realized:
The feeling was back.
🧠 What’s Really Behind a “Perfect Shot”?
After reflecting (and with some AI coaching insight), I learned that a shot like this is never just about the arm.
It’s a combination of:
- Footwork – getting into the right position
- Timing – contacting the ball at the right moment
- Brushing technique – generating spin, not force
- Confidence – trusting the stroke
When all of these come together, the result is that “perfect trajectory” we all love to see.
🚶♂️ The Real Weak Point: Footwork
Here’s the honest part.
My strokes are coming back —
but my footwork is not there yet.
And that’s actually the key lesson of the day.
In table tennis, especially as we get older:
It’s not the stroke that limits us — it’s whether our feet can get us there on time.
Right now, my footwork feels a bit slow and not fully activated. But that’s okay — it’s part of the process.
🔑 5 Simple Lessons for All of Us
For my fellow ping pong friends, here are a few practical takeaways:
1. Small Steps Matter More Than Big Moves
Don’t rush with big jumps.
Use small adjustment steps to stay balanced.
2. Reset After Every Shot
Good players don’t admire their shots.
They recover immediately.
3. Practice Without a Table
Just 2–3 minutes at home:
- side-to-side steps
- shadow swings
It helps more than you think.
4. Timing Beats Speed
You don’t need to be faster —
you need to be earlier.
5. Don’t Chase the Perfect Shot
One good shot is a sign — not a goal.
Focus on the feeling, not forcing the result.
🌱 A Personal Reflection
What encouraged me most today was not the shot itself,
but what it represents:
- My body still remembers
- My confidence is returning
- My game is rebuilding, step by step
And maybe the most important realization:
Once the feeling comes back, everything else will follow.
☕ Final Thought
Ping pong at our age is not about power or speed.
It’s about:
- rhythm
- timing
- enjoyment
- and sharing the moment with friends
Today, I didn’t just play better.
I felt the game again.
And that, to me, is the real victory.
