Those Were The Days

My mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread butter on bread on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning.

Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag,   not in ice pack coolers, but I can't remember getting e. Coli.

Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake or at the beach instead of a pristine pool  (talk about boring), no beach closures then.

We all took PE ..... and risked permanent injury with a pair of Dunlop sneakers instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors that cost as much as a small car.

I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now. 

We got the strap for doing something wrong at school, they used to call it discipline yet we all grew up to accept the rules and to honor & respect those older than us.

We had 50 kids in our class and we all learned to read and write, do math and spell almost all the words needed to write a grammatically correct letter......., 

We all said prayers in school and sang the national anthem, and staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention.

I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself.

I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations. We weren't!!

Oh yeah ... and where was the antibiotics and sterilization kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed!

We played “King of the Hill” on piles of gravel left on vacant building sites and when we got hurt, mom pulled out the bottle of iodine and then we got our backside spanked.

Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10 day dose of antibiotics and then mom calls the lawyer to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat.

To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family.

How could we possibly have known that?

We never needed to get into group therapy and/or anger management classes.

We were obviously so duped by so many society ills, that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac!

How did we ever survive? 

LOVE TO ALL OF US WHO SHARED THIS ERA. 
AND TO ALL WHO DIDN'T, SORRY FOR WHAT YOU MISSED. 

I WOULDN'T TRADE IT FOR ANYTHING!


Pass this to someone and remember that life's most simple pleasures are very often the best. 
AAAAh, those WERE the days!!!!

What You Should Know About Osteoporosis - Bone collagen connective tissues - especially in the spine

When you say "osteoporosis", we immediately think it is caused by lack of calcium. Doctors will recommend you to take more calcium, vitamin D, and sun exposure or sunbath.

However, the latest findings in various hospitals show that the majority of osteoporosis patients are not caused by lack of calcium.

Their bones are complete and absorbing calcium. So what is wrong with them? CT scan results show no signs of osteoporosis, yet, the patients easily suffer from bone fractures. What's going on?

Here, we came to know about a new strain of osteoporosis that was discovered since about two years ago.

The most common type of bone fracture nowadays is "spinal fracture". If spinal fracture occurs, the risk of death is eight times higher than any other type of bone fractures.

What is the reason that bones are weakening? Why do patients suffer from broken spine?

It is an important factor to have bone strength, not just bone density.. Bone collagen connective tissues are also an important factor to create flexibility.

Many of us didn't realize this at first sight. In the past, osteoporosis
was viewed more on bone strength, and we never hear and realize about these connective tissues.

To improve bone density, it's a common knowledge to do regular exercise and have a higher calcium intake like by eating calcium-rich dried fishes.

But now, we have to think of a new measure to maintain bone collagen connective tissues to have enough flexibility. From this simple measure, you may escape from the risk of death caused by fracture of spinal bones.

To measure or determine strong bone and bone mineral density are not as easy as what you may think.

Clinically, it has to pass various tests.


Well, what is the major cause that leads to reduction of bone collagen connective tissues? Do you believe that it is because of high blood sugar?

The major component of bone, which is about one half of its structure, is calcium, and collagen is the other half. Collagen fibres run through hundreds of bone materials (calcium), and the bones that we know are made.

You can imagine that the bone materials (calcium) are somewhat bonded by collagen and kept with reasonable flexibility. However, when blood sugar increases, the collagen will be joined as if there is an adhesive cement around, and the bone will become brittle.

To avoid the increase of blood sugar, exercise is one of the best things to do.  Aside from it, we recommend you to take a
balanced diet that contains vitamin B12 and vitamin B6, and foods such as mackerel, sardines, clams, folic acid, broccoli, spinach, garland chrysanthemum ,*soybeans, and asparagus.

By taking these foods, you can have strong flexible bones.


3 COMMON MYTHS ON OSTEOPOROSIS

1. Myth: 
Young people should not worry about osteoporosis.
Wrong. You will not realize that you have osteoporosis until you have this condition in advanced stages. That is why it is very important to begin proper nutrition and regular exercise as early as childhood to promote healthy bones.

2. Myth:
Only women get osteoporosis.
Wrong. Although less common, men can get osteoporosis, too. 20% of those affected by osteoporosis are men.

3. Myth:
Drinking plenty of milk will help you prevent osteoporosis.
Not entirely true. Even though drinking milk is a good way to get calcium, it is not the only factor in preventing osteoporosis. There are others as mentioned in this article.

此首《煙花易冷》其歌詞故事背後之典故出處源於《洛陽伽藍記》。《洛陽伽藍記》是一部集佛教典故、文學筆觸、與朝代歷歷史,以及地理人文於一身的千古名著,為北魏人楊炫之所撰,成書於東魏孝靜帝時(西元547年)。正因其獨特近似近代紀錄片的史觀,使得《洛陽伽藍記》與《水經注》、《齊民要術》等合稱北魏百年來三大奇書之一。《煙花易冷》所描述的正是一千五百多年前楊炫之筆下那個盛極繁華後傾塌頹圮的千年古都洛陽城中,一名皇家將領與其所傾慕之女子間的愛情故事。該名將領因緣邂逅女子後,倆人一見鍾情並且私定終身,此時將領卻被朝庭徵調至邊境征戰,在連年的兵荒馬亂中,帝都洛陽已淪廢墟,殘破不堪,最後女子苦守將領不遇後,落發為尼,待將領歷經風霜歸來尋至女子所出 家的伽藍古寺,但卻人事已非,塵緣已盡。就在雨夜的古寺中,倆人相望無語,感歎著世間的繁榮就如同璀璨的煙花般易逝!

Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this.!!! 
Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 
eleven (11) things they did not and will not learn in school. 
He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings 
created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and 
how this concept set them up for failure in the real world. 


Rule 1 : Life is not fair - get used to it! 

Rule 2 : The world doesn't care about your self-esteem. 
The world will expect you to accomplish something 
BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. 
You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss 

Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. 
Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: 
They called it opportunity.

Rule 6 : If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, 
so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 10 : Television is NOT real life. 
In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11 : Be nice to nerds. 
Chances are you'll end up working for one..

Reminder - Table Tennis Winter Skills Clinic at Oak Ridges

There will be a Table Tennis Winter Skills Clinic at Oak Ridges starting on Tuesday, February 11, 2014, 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., for a duration of 4 weeks.  Course fee is $35.57.  Course No. is 416695.  Minimum of 10 people to start the clinic.  Below is the outline of the clinic:  

1. The participants will be divided into 2-3 groups, judging from the individual's skill level by an assessment.

2. Accordingly, the instructor will collect the participants' ideas of HOW they want to improve their skill level .  He will  focus on small group coaching, likewise 1 to 3, or 1 to 4................, with limited table assigned. 

3. The following skill and technique will demonstrate during the course:
  • a proper serve and after strokes related, ( and game plan tactically )
  • looping vs. attack drill, and related footwork
  • flick ( flip ) shot, a contemporary skill to pick up
  • chop ( short push ) inside the table vs. long chop mixed with looping
  • play better level table tennis with proper body co-ordination, footwork other than simple arm swing
4. Certainly, any individual's request to improve the personal skill will be answered and demonstrated during  the course.

媽媽講廣東國語,女兒講京片子!
 “37” 是一部中港合作電影。
導演是香港電影發展局的新銳陳國新。演員包括劉曉慶,楊采妮和林妙可。



當友人彭博士邀請我觀賞“37”的時候,我起初的反應老實說是少許
憂心,恐怕半場熟睡而失禮老友。我一年上不了一次電影院。
因為看一般的“流行電影”時總忍不住諸多挑剔,連自己也覺得掃興
兼討厭。獨立製作和實驗電影間中會帶來驚喜。可惜多數藝術創作
都有點玄,令我散場後一頭霧水,精神彷彿。
說起來也奇怪:有條理的平鋪直敘其實在日常生活中十分罕有,
毫不尋常,但藝術家門似乎仍然覺得要轉彎抹角才能突出創意。

一部以“37”為名的電影,據說片中不少草原風光和蒙古“有機”兒童
的歌舞場面,當然令我疑心頓起。於是看前做足了負面心裡準備。
想不到竟然是一部難得佳作:風光如畫,音樂恰當,故事動人。
劉曉慶和一班孩子們的演出清純自然。導演手法簡潔,恰到好處。均值一讚。

動人的故事不一定要劇情複雜。 “37”的迷人之處,就是能夠以簡單
的情節直透人心。我介紹看過的人,都說90分鐘內哭掉了整包紙巾。

一個香港的單身媽媽女強人(楊采妮)和小女兒(林妙可)到蒙古
半公幹半渡假。他們開頭對一切充滿戒心,連麵包車的座椅扶手也
要先鋪上紙巾才安心上座。結果經過小孩子之間的天真接觸和友情
發展,媽媽才茅塞頓開。一次的蒙古旅程,替母女倆帶來不少啟發。
故事就那麼簡單。寓意也很明顯。導演很聰明地沒有過份賣弄。

被金錢物質牽著鼻鉤著心過活的城市人,精神緊張疲乏。
到了相對“落後”的草原,面對所有事物都疑神疑鬼。既擔心衛生
條件不足,又怕被“窮人”敲竹槓,更怕蛇蟲鼠蟻咬。
美麗的大自然沒有臆想中的浪漫:遠觀還勉強可以,近玩則渾身
難過。相比之下,被大漠孕育出來的人胸襟遼闊,氣量坦然。
對他們來說,地在腳下,天在當前。
大自然美麗,可愛,可畏,神秘,慷慨,養育著大家。

自作聰明的人類不斷把環境改變。但曾經改造和被破壞的生態環境
,會反過來改變生活在其中的人的身心健康。這是自然定律,也是
因果循環。無可避免。

看過電影后,跟香港方面的製片人李志剛聊了半天。李志剛多才
多藝,是風險投資家,也是業餘音樂家和劇作家。多年來還管理
一隊爵士樂隊。他也是演講高手,十分健談。說到他的製作時
更是口若懸河。

“37” 源於鳳凰衛視王紀元先生的一個想法。據說王先生童年時曾經
在內蒙渡過,覺得很多零星族裔靠世代口傳的歌曲很容易被遺忘,
以至失傳。他希望統籌呼倫貝爾五彩兒童合唱團把不同方言的民歌
收集演出,拍成紀錄片,並邀請李志剛參予。李志剛一下子就被
37位小朋友的歌聲當場迷住。接著是一個想法引出另一個念頭。
在香港電影發展局和內地資金的支持下,原來計劃的紀錄片終於
變成了電影“37”。

李志剛將“37” 媲美 “仙樂飄飄處處聞”。但我覺得“37”除了有同樣迷
人的兒童演員和音樂之外,更帶有急切的時代訊息。生活在21世紀
的智人物質過剩,卻多方失衡。
看了“37”可能會對人類的所謂發展作出片刻反思。
